Samsung Display to Begin Manufacturing OLED Panels for iPhone 15 Series Early Due to BOE Production Issues

Samsung Display is set to start manufacturing OLED panels for the iPhone 15 Series in May, a month earlier than originally planned, according to TheElec. This decision comes as a result of production issues faced by BOE, which was given an order by Apple to produce some OLED panels for the standard model of the iPhone 15. <!–more–>

BOE’s Production Problems

Sources indicate that BOE is experiencing light leak issues around the hole at the top of the OLED panel planned for the standard iPhone 15 model. This hole accommodates the front camera and various sensors. Due to these problems, BOE has missed the opportunity to become one of the initial suppliers of hole-display panels.

The light leak problem in hole-display panels occurs when the areas within the hole are not properly covered, causing light to leak directly from the hole.

Samsung Display Steps In

Samsung Display was already scheduled to supply OLED panels for the standard iPhone 15 model, but it will now begin production earlier in response to BOE’s difficulties. The company will start manufacturing OLED panels for the high-tier iPhone 15 models in June, as originally planned.

The iPhone 15 Series’ standard and plus models will use low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) thin-film transistors (TFT), while the Pro and Pro Max models will employ low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) TFT.

LG Display and BOE’s Future Supply

LG Display is also set to begin producing LTPO TFT OLED panels for the higher-tier iPhone 15 models in June. As for BOE, sources say the Chinese display panel maker is making progress in resolving the light leak issue and could start supplying OLED panels for the iPhone 15 within the year.
