iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 May Drop Support for Older Apple Devices

Apple’s upcoming iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 are expected to drop support for some older devices, including the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, first-generation iPad Pro, and fifth-generation iPad.

Supported Devices for iOS 17 and iPadOS 17

According to recent reports, Apple’s iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 will not be compatible with devices powered by the A11 Bionic chip or older, with a few exceptions. The affected devices include the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, first-generation 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro, and fifth-generation iPad. The sixth and seventh-generation iPads with the A10 Fusion chip, and the second-generation 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro with the A10X Fusion chip will still be supported.

Reason for Dropping Support

iPhones and iPads equipped with the A5 through A11 chip have a bootrom security vulnerability that Apple cannot patch, allowing these devices to be perpetually jailbroken on a wide range of iOS versions. This vulnerability may be a reason for dropping support for older devices.

Announcement at WWDC

Apple is expected to announce iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 during its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) keynote on June 5. The official list of supported devices may vary slightly from the leaked information.
