Apple Introduces Firmware Update for AirPods Series
Apple has released the new 5E135 firmware for AirPods 2, AirPods 3, original AirPods Pro, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Max, replacing the 5E133 firmware from April. The company does not provide immediate release notes for AirPods firmware updates but maintains a support document detailing the release information.
Firmware Update Process for AirPods
AirPods firmware updates are installed over-the-air while connected to an iOS device. To force the update, users should place the AirPods in their case, connect them to a power source, and pair them with an iPhone or iPad. The update should begin after a short period.
Updating AirPods Firmware without an Apple Device
For users without an Apple device, the company recommends visiting an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider to update their firmware. While this may be inconvenient, most AirPods users likely own an Apple device. Android and PC users cannot install firmware updates from their devices as Apple does not offer an AirPods management app for non-Apple platforms.
Automatic Firmware Updates when Charging
Apple has updated its support document to clarify that firmware updates are installed automatically when AirPods are charging and within range of an iPhone, iPad, or Mac connected to WiFi. The new firmware 5E133 brings bug fixes and improvements to the AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods Pro, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Max.
