Samsung Considers Replacing Google Search with Bing, Citing ChatGPT Integration

Samsung May Adopt Bing over Google, Attracted by ChatGPT Integration

Samsung is reportedly considering replacing Google search with Microsoft’s Bing on its smartphone devices, potentially jeopardizing $3 billion in annual revenue for Google. The integration of OpenAI technologies like ChatGPT into Bing has bolstered its credibility as a search engine alternative and is a significant factor in Samsung’s consideration. Negotiations are ongoing, and no final decision has been made yet.

Google Pursues AI-Powered Projects to Counter ChatGPT-enabled Bing

In response to Bing’s growing threat, particularly due to the ChatGPT integration, Google is working on multiple projects, including Project Magi, which focuses on adding AI features to its existing services and has over 160 employees working on it. Google aims to retain its dominance in the search engine space, which it has held for nearly 25 years.

Implications for Market Share and Mobile Device Partnerships

Samsung shipped 261 million smartphones in 2022, all running Google’s Android software. It maintains partnerships with both Microsoft and Google, and its devices come preloaded with a library of apps and services from both companies. A switch to Bing, with its ChatGPT-like capabilities, could significantly impact Google’s commanding market share in mobile devices, which also includes a deal with Apple Inc. worth roughly $20 billion in annual revenue.
