Samsung Introduces Menstrual Cycle Monitoring with Skin Temperature Tracking on Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro
Samsung has announced a major update for the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, adding skin temperature tracking to monitor menstrual cycles. The new feature is powered by Natural Cycles’ technology and Samsung’s sensor technology.
New Menstrual Cycle Tracking Feature
By utilizing the skin temperature sensor, users can monitor menstrual cycles and better understand their individual cycle patterns, including ovulation windows. The watch can estimate basal body temperature (BBT), a key marker for menstrual tracking, while the user sleeps.
The feature will be rolled out progressively through Samsung Health app updates in the U.S., Korea, and 30 European markets. To activate the feature, users must add their recent cycle information in the Samsung Health app and enable “Predict period with skin temp” in settings.
Benefits of this feature include access to a graph displaying the prior month’s readings, predicted ovulation and fertile windows, tips based on symptoms, and suggestions for holistic health management during cycles.
Competition and Significance
The Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro join other wearables that offer menstrual cycle tracking, such as the Apple Watch 8 and the Oura ring. Monitoring menstrual cycles is essential for women as it helps them understand their health and bodies, and contributes to reproductive health, including family planning and pregnancy prevention.
