Tata Group to Take Over Wistron’s iPhone Manufacturing Plant in India

Tata Group Acquires Wistron’s iPhone Manufacturing Plant in India

Indian conglomerate Tata Group is set to take complete control of Wistron’s iPhone manufacturing plant in Bengaluru, India, making it the first Indian manufacturer to hold a leading position in the Apple supply chain. The takeover could lead to the production of the upcoming iPhone 15 in India.

Tata’s Expansion in Apple’s India-Based Supply Chain

Tata Group plans to complete the takeover of Wistron’s iPhone plant by the end of April. The company is also expanding production at its iPhone component manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu and is reportedly in talks with Pegatron to acquire its iPhone factories.

India Becomes a Growing Tech Manufacturing Hub

As political tensions between the US and China increase, India has become an attractive tech manufacturing hub. Apple has been gradually increasing iPhone production in India over the past few years, with the country now handling more than 2% of global iPhone production.

Wistron’s Exit from India and Potential iPhone 15 Production

Following the takeover, Wistron will no longer have a presence in India. This comes after a 2020 incident involving worker riots over unpaid salaries and poor working conditions at the Bengaluru plant, which led to Apple putting Wistron on probation for breaching its supplier code of conduct. Once Tata takes over the plant, it is likely to begin producing the iPhone 15.
