Microsoft’s New Xbox Series X: A Mid-Generation Refresh for 2024 with Enhanced Features

Microsoft is gearing up for a significant mid-generation refresh of its Xbox Series X and S consoles, slated for release in 2024. Leaked documents from the FTC have unveiled intriguing details about the upcoming consoles, including their codenames, specifications, and design changes.

New Xbox Series X: Codenamed Brooklin

The next iteration of the Xbox Series X, codenamed Brooklin, is set to be a digital-only console, deviating from the traditional rectangular design to adopt a more cylindrical shape. This revamped design will not feature a disc drive, emphasizing the shift towards digital gaming.

In terms of specifications, Brooklin is expected to boast a powerful 12 teraflops performance, support 4K resolution, and come equipped with 16GB of RAM. The console will also offer a generous 2TB of storage, a significant upgrade considering its digital-only nature.

Sustainability and Power Efficiency

Microsoft appears to be emphasizing sustainability with the new Xbox Series X. The leaked documents highlight a 15% reduction in PSU supply and a new low-power standby mode that consumes only 20% of the current version’s power. Additionally, the console will be packaged in 100% recyclable materials, reflecting Microsoft’s commitment to eco-friendly practices.

Xbox Series S Refresh: Codenamed Ellewood

The Xbox Series S is not left behind in this mid-generation refresh. Codenamed Ellewood, the updated console will feature 10GB of RAM. Both Brooklin and Ellewood are set to be unveiled simultaneously in summer 2024, hinting at a potential Summer Games Fest reveal. The launch timeline suggests that Ellewood will debut in August 2024, followed by Brooklin in October 2024. Both consoles are expected to retain their current price points of USD$300 and $500, respectively.

Sebile: The New Xbox Controller

Alongside the console refresh, Microsoft is also introducing a new Xbox controller, codenamed Sebile. This controller is set to feature an accelerometer for gyro support, allowing users to simply lift it to wake the gamepad. Scheduled for a Q4 2024 announcement and a May 2024 release, Sebile will be priced at USD$70.

The controller will also support a direct connection to the cloud, Bluetooth 5.2, and a presumably updated “Xbox Wireless 2” connection. Other notable features include “precision haptic feedback,” quieter buttons and thumbsticks, a rechargeable and swappable battery, and modular thumbsticks.

Additional Features and Roadmap

The new Xbox Series X will support Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, and will undergo a die shrink to 6nm for improved efficiency. Microsoft’s roadmap also hints at a refreshed Xbox Series S with 1TB of storage and the inclusion of the new Sebile controller. The company’s Xbox Design Lab program is also expected to offer console customization, although this feature is yet to receive full funding.

Coming in 2024

Microsoft’s new Xbox Series X and S refresh for 2024 promises a blend of enhanced performance, innovative design, and sustainability. With a digital-only approach, increased storage, and a focus on power efficiency, the upcoming consoles reflect the future of gaming. As the gaming community eagerly awaits the official announcement, it’s clear that Microsoft is poised to redefine the gaming landscape with its next-generation consoles.
